「おい、あいつら、SDGsなんてやってる暇があったら、利益を追えって話だろうが。」
社長の怒鳴り声が会議室に響き渡る。私たちは、ESG投資に取り組むことを提案していたが、社長はそれをまったく受け入れようとしなかった。
「でも、社会的な責任を果たさなければ、長期的には利益を上げることができないと思うんですよ。それに、コンプライアンスを守ることが今後のビジネスにとっても大切だと思います。」
私は、怒鳴られながらも自分の考えを述べた。しかし、社長はそれを聞き入れることなく、机を叩きながら言った。
「コンプライアンスだと？誰がそんなものに時間を費やすか？そんなことに神経を使っているうちは、競合他社に追い抜かれるだけだ。」
社長の言葉に、私たちは言い返すことができなかった。ただ、黙って会議室を後にした。
その後、私たちは会社におけるコンプライアンス教育に力を入れることにした。ESG投資には至っていなかったが、少なくとも、法律を守ることは徹底することになった。
しかし、それでも、社長は私たちの取り組みを馬鹿にし、罰金が科せられるようなことがあっても、それを払うことを厭わないと言い続けた。
そして、ついに、それが現実のものとなった。
ある日、私たちの会社が、グリーンウォッシュの疑いがあるとして、取り調べを受けることになった。私たちは、何も悪いことをしていないと主張したが、それでも、罰金を科せられることになった。
それを受け、私たちは、今までの誤解を払拭するために、自分たちがどのような取り組みをしているか、広く知ってもらうことにした。
そして、私たちの取り組みが報じられたことで、多くの人々から支持されるようになった。私たちは、手が４本あるようなものスピードで、社会的な責任を果たし、コンプライアンスを守ることで、ビジネスと社会の両方に貢献することができた。
しかし、それでも、社長は変わらず私たちの取り組みを嘲笑し続けた。そんな中、ある日、社長が心筋梗塞を発症した。
私たちは、社長が倒れたことにショックを受けたが、同時に、社長が健康であった時には聞くことのできなかった、彼の本音に触れることができた。
社長は、利益を追求することがビジネスの全てであると信じていた。しかし、自分自身が健康を害したことで、自分の考え方が間違っていたことに気づかされたのだろう。
私たちは、社長が倒れたことを悲しむと同時に、彼の教訓を胸に、今後もコンプライアンスを守り、ESG投資に取り組むことを決意した。
そして、私たちの取り組みが認められ、多くの人々から支持されるようになった。社長の倒れたことが、私たちにとっての転機となったのだ。
私たちは、気功砲のようなパワーを持ったわけではない。しかし、社会的な責任を果たすことで、ビジネスにおいても成功することができたのだ。
私たちは、社長のように利益だけを追求することではなく、ビジネスと社会の両方に貢献することを目指して、日々努力している。そして、私たちは、コンプライアンスを守ることが、未来を変える一歩になることを、心から信じている。

“Change the future with compliance”
Hey, those guys should be chasing profits instead of playing with the SDGs.”
The president’s yell echoed through the conference room. We had proposed that we engage in ESG investment, but the president was having none of it.
He said, “But I don’t think we can make a profit in the long run without fulfilling our social responsibilities. Besides, I think compliance is important for the future of our business.”
I expressed my thoughts despite being yelled at. However, the president did not hear me, but instead tapped on his desk and said.
‘Compliance, you say? Who spends time on such things? As long as you’re nervous about such things, you’ll only be overtaken by your competitors.”
We could not say anything back to the president. We just silently left the conference room.
We then decided to focus on compliance training at the company, and although we had not gotten to ESG investing, we were at least going to make sure that we were obeying the law.
But even then, the CEO kept making fun of our efforts and insisting that we were willing to pay any fines that might be levied.
Finally, it became a reality.
One day, our company was being investigated for alleged greenwashing. We insisted that we had done nothing wrong, but we were still fined.
In response, we decided to make our efforts known to the public in order to dispel any misconceptions that had been created.
And as our efforts were reported, we gained the support of many people. We were able to contribute to both business and society by being socially responsible and compliant at the speed of something like four hands.
Still, however, the president continued to ridicule our efforts without change. Then one day, the president suffered a myocardial infarction.
We were shocked to hear that the president had collapsed, but at the same time we were able to get in touch with his true intentions, which we had not been able to hear when he was in good health.
The president believed that the pursuit of profit was everything in business. However, his own failing health must have made him realize that his way of thinking was wrong.
We were saddened by the president’s fall, but at the same time determined to keep his lessons in mind and continue to be compliant and committed to ESG investing.
And our efforts were recognized and supported by many. The fall of the president was a turning point for us.
We did not have the power of a qigong cannon. But we were able to succeed in business by fulfilling our social responsibilities.
We do not pursue only profit, like the president, but strive every day to contribute to both business and society. And we truly believe that compliance is a step toward changing the future.
