He began to need a wheelchair in his old age. At first he could walk on his own, but gradually his legs and back deteriorated, and even climbing stairs became a challenge. However, he was always active and developed an awareness of his disability to solve his own problems.
Then he noticed a problem with the elevator in his building. The elevator broke down and he had to use a wheelchair to go up and down the five-story building. Time and again he suffered from the inability to use the elevator, but he never gave up. He raised the issue with the building’s management and stressed to them about the importance of barrier-free access. Then he decided to send out a message.
He noticed a poster at the entrance of the building. The poster stated that a barrier-free elevator for people in wheelchairs was scheduled to be installed. He saw this and felt that he had contributed in some small way to solving this problem. However, he felt he still needed a kienzan.
He became a skinhead. It was a decision he made to avoid prejudice and discrimination. When he started using a wheelchair, he attracted a lot of attention from people around him. This was because people looked at him with surprise and pity. But he hated it. He wanted to prove that he could overcome obstacles on his own. And by becoming a skinhead, he was able to maintain his identity and deal with obstacles on his own.
